In 2013 The New York Times called us ‘poetry in motion’.
Our video with Justin Bieber has more than one billion views. There’s no doubt about it - what Esther Williams did in the 40s and 50s is timeless and just as viable today! We want to collaborate next on something with heart - and that comes from story. No one’s story is more compelling than Esther Williams’!
Esther rose up through an era when a woman with a career was uncommon, and even those with careers had little agency. But she did more than just survive, she persevered and persisted. She maneuvered to the top of a Hollywood circus where the ring leaders were ALL men and there... she invented an art form.
I want to collaborate with you to tell Esther’s story authentically and magnificently. Given your personal relationship with Esther, and my connections with producers, actors, studio executives, underwater cinematographers and showrunners, I believe we are the perfect team to make this show happen!
Her story is deep and nuanced, together we can do it justice. I have read your screenplay, and of course Esther’s autobiography, many times. I have scoured the press on her, and am particularly drawn to Esther’s character and contradictions.
The magic of this show will be the way it contrasts the epic world of water ballet against austere domestic drama. It’s underwater wonderlands and acrobatic feats juxtaposed to abuse, extortion and abandonment.
Similar to Beth Harmon in Queen’s Gambit, Esther is a woman at the top of her game, in a world among men...
… who is battling her own demons.
And like The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’s Miriam Maisel, Esther stands up to bullies and makes her own way while navigating the impossible pressure of being an in-demand professional in an era when women, and especially mothers, were expected to be in the home.
The show is huge, meaningful, musical, splashy…
It’s a crossover showpiece for a movie star, and I think we can get one. It could be Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) , Margo Robbie (Barbie, iTonya), Florence Pugh (Oppenheimer, Don’t Worry Darling, Little Women)…
In addition to casting a leading lady who can carry the array of emotions in expressed in Esther’s story, a seasoned showrunner who can sell the show to a network, will be essential.
Having a seasoned showrunner on the team will make it easier to attach a star. There is a current trend of hiring women as showrunners which is helpful for this project because of the themes of surviving sexual harassment, balancing work with motherhood and navigating the patriarchy as a businesswoman. I have relationships with the following female showrunners.
Johanna Calo - The Bear (Emmy Winner for Outstanding Comedy Series), Beef, Hacks
Nikki Toscano - (with an overall deal at Paramount+) Florida Man, American Gigolo, The Offer
Maryam Keshavarz - Circumstance, Viper Club, Persian Version (Sundance Audience Award 2023)
Liz Flahive - Glow, Roar, Nurse Jackie
Liz Hannah - The Post, The Girl From Plainville, The Dropout, Lee
Carly Mensch - Glow, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds
I am confident I can develop, package, and sell the show. This will include attaching a showrunner, pitching to networks, and securing financiers. But to devote my time and resources to this fully, I need an agreement in place.
The shopping agreement will need to include the rights to the book, Ester’s life rights, and the screenplay in a bundle so that buyers like Amazon know that there are no competitive projects on the market.
Fees and credits for you and Victor will be negotiated with the buyer when we set it up.
The term will be limited and the rights will return to you after the term if I can't make a deal with a buyer.
I believe in this project and in us as a team. My deepest hope is that we are working in collaboration to bring the radiance and depth of Esther’s story to life!
